#VENICE(UN)ENTITLED is a piece from a collaborative multimedia gallery show.

From two distinct neighborhood vantages, artists Glen Wilson and I have witnessed and documented the dramatic transformation of Venice Beach, where we have called home for 15 years. Our collaborative installation, #VENICE(UN)ENTITLED shares visual fragments of an ongoing conversation between artists. We explore the collisions, contradictions, and contrasts exposed by the process of gentrification in a neighborhood.

Michele Castagnetti, Venice-based graphic designer, shares his latest photographic book Venice Bikes, which essays the abandoned, customized, eccentric and iconic bicycles of Venice.

    About the Book:

Los Angeles, and especially the iconic beach community of Venice, represent a different way of biking than cities like New York. The bikes range from pure expressions of creativity with sails and flags to two-wheeled RVs that contain everything necessary for “outdoor living.” The abandoned bikes are quite similar to the ones in the more metropolitan cities except that the style in Los Angeles tends to be of the beach cruiser model. I’ve never seen a bike with a bouquet of flowers in the basket in New York, especially lasting days locked on the street. On the one hand, we have the West Coast flower child spirit with peace and political signs attached to bikes and on the other, the patriotic star spangled banners of the die-hard homeless republicans. The customizing aspect is also a key element of Venice, visible in skull n’ bones cup holders, cartoon character bells, surf board holders and bikes with trailers that hold entire personal belongings. The bike is of course also integrated in the culture of the green healthy spiritual lifestyle currently en vogue. What I still haven’t seen yet is the inevitable lululemon® custom yoga mat holder, but I would guess it’s soon to come.

For the last 12 years, I have been documenting what has been taking place within Venice, California, which also happens to be where I work, where I live, and where I share the journeys, hopes, and dreams of my fellow Venetians.
